WHO IS A GYNAE ?

Gynae is a commonly used short name for a doctor specialised in Obstetrics and Gynaecology ( also known as O&G or OBGYN ). Gynaecologists and obstetricians are doctors who specialise in women’s health. While obstetricians specialise in pregnancy and childbirth. Gynaecologists deal with disorders and conditions of the female reproductive system. These include conditions such as acute pelvic inflammatory disease, cancers of the female reproductive organs. A doctor will often specialise in both these areas.

To become a gynaecologist or obstetrician, a doctor must pass examinations that are set by a college which oversees postgraduate training in the field. In the UK, that will be the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RCOG). Once accredited, gynaes become a member of the College and can put the letters MRCOG after their name. Other colleges include the The Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RANZCOG) , The Hong Kong College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists and the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists .
