WHO IS A GYNECOLOGIST ?
Gynae is a commonly used short name for a doctor specialised in Obstetrics and Gynecology ( also known as O&G or OBGYN ). Gynaecologists and obstetricians are doctors who specialise in women’s health. While obstetricians specialise in pregnancy and childbirth. Gynaecologists deal with disorders and conditions of the female reproductive system. These include conditions such as acute pelvic inflammatory disease, cancers of the female reproductive organs. A doctor will often specialise in both these areas.
To become a gynecologist or obstetrician, a doctor must pass examinations that are set by a college which oversees postgraduate training in the field. In the UK, that will be the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RCOG). Once accredited, gynaes become a member of the College and can put the letters MRCOG after their name. Other colleges include the The Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RANZCOG) , The Hong Kong College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists and the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists . In some countries, midwives (nurses who are train to deliver babies) are allowed to deliver babies and a gynecologist will be called only in complicated pregnancies or where a caesarian section is necessary. In Singapore, gynecologist usually does the actual delivery.
WHERE TO FIND A GYNECOLOGIST IN SINGAPORE?
A gynecologist in Singapore is very much a woman's physician. So you can find many gynecologists fulfilling this role by setting up their clinics in housing estates or suburban shopping malls. Women can easily pop into these clinics for simple gynecological problems and routine checkups. Gynecologists are also found in dedicated medical centres and hospitals. Thomson Medical Centre, for example, houses mainly gynecologists and boasts a high number of babies born in their wards. For complex gynecological issues where surgery or other therapy are required, patients can go to large acute medical centres that have surgeons and other specialists on standby. Mount Elizabeth Hospital and Gleneagles Hospital are the better known medical centres with gynecologists who specialise in subfertility, IVF, urogynecological problems and gynecological cancers.
